You already know it can rot your teeth and make you fat. But did you know sugar can also damage your s*x life?
You need energy to maintain a healthy s*x drive, experts say, especially if you have a frenetic work and family life. But if you’re clogging your engines with fast-burning fuel that doesn’t last (read: sugar), you are less likely to be to energetic when it comes to after hours activities. Sugar crashes impact for everyone in the bedroom but can be particularly damaging for men.
“Consistently high blood sugar causes damage to the nerves and blood vessels, affecting the absorption of glucose from the blood. This decreases sensitivity, making it more difficult for you to get an erection,” Men’s Health reported. “Pair this with high blood pressure, heart disease and low testosterone levels, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.”
In fact, eating too much fructose and glucose can turn off the gene that regulates levels of testosterone and estrogen in the body, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
“This discovery reinforces public health advice to eat complex carbohydrates and avoid sugar,” as the report put it.
Sugar can also spike our stress levels, which is certainly a mood killer. Sugar also creates leptin resistance in the body, experts note. Leptin is a hormone that helps monitor s****l behavior, which means you may never look at a candy bar the same way again. Then there are the insulin issues.
“Sugars require insulin for processing. This constant increase in insulin is linked with low testosterone levels,” Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD, co-director of the PUR Clinic in Clermont, Florida, told Reader’s Digest. Carbohydrates can also turn to sugar, which spikes blood glucose levels and causes the pancreas to make more insulin. “Get the salad over pasta on date night.”
All of which means that cutting back on sugar may be key to increasing your, shall we say, appetite.
Can sugar be sapping your s*x life?
