Although the flamboyant Britain’s Got Talent judge frequently pushes the boundaries with his tales full of wildly exaggerated stereotypes, somehow they work — youngsters just can’t get enough of them.

And he’s done it again with latest book Fing, released.

A new David Walliams book is always a big event in my house, with my son and I often arguing over who gets to read it first. This time, because I have to review it for you lot, I pulled rank and won.

Fing is all about a greedy girl called Myrtle Meek who, despite her surname, is anything but meek.

Over-indulged by her too-soft parents, she’s a great, brattish lump of a girl who has everything she could possibly want, but whose favourite phrase is “more, more, more”.

And what she now wants is a “Fing”. So Mr Meek sets off to the deepest, darkest jungle to get his darling her heart’s desire. But is he strong enough to find and tame the Fing and bring it back? And what will be the consequences for Myrtle? Will she finally meet her match?

Did you know?

  • David has spent a record 138 weeks (non-consecutive) at No1 in the kids’ book charts.
  • Many of his books have been adapted for TV.
  • He has also written picture books for tots, including The Slightly Annoying Elephant, The First Hippo on the the Moon and Geronimo.
  • He wrote picture book The Queen’s Orang-utan for Comic Relief.

For the past decade, 45-year-old Walliams has dominated the kids’ book charts, with titles including Gangsta Granny, Ratburger, Billionaire Boy, Mr Stink — and latest bestsellers Bad Dad and The Ice Monster.

Many of his bestsellers, which have sold more than 29million copies, have been illustrated by Tony Ross — and Fing is no exception.

Like Roald Dahl before him, Walliams has the ability to grab an idea and run with it — then keep on running.

Fing is zany, slightly gruesome and just the right side of dark to ensure the author’s winning streak continues.
