County must ensure
inmates keep Medi-Cal
Re: “Alameda County: Call to help inmates keep Medi-Cal benefits” (Eastbaytimes.com, Oct. 29):
As a resident of Alameda County, it is unfortunate to find out that our county has failed to provide resources to ensure that inmates continue to receive medical benefits upon their release.
When other counties have already taken measures to address this issue, one would hope we would do the same.
As a Santa Clara County employee, I know that we have a system that addresses this issue. In accordance with AB 720, Santa Clara County appointed the Sheriff’s Department to assist inmates nearing their release date to complete and submit the Medi-Cal application to the appropriate agency.
It is time for Alameda County to propose a policy that furthers the health of our community. We currently have a justice system that is in dire need of reform and I hope we act quickly to do our part.
