China wouldn’t let world
learn Taiwan’s virus plan
Re: “WHO bows to calls from countries for independent virus probe” (Eastbaytimes.com, May 18):
The U.S. news media consistently fails to mention that Taiwan was expelled (2016) from membership in the World Health Organization, due to pressure from Communist China, whose control over the WHO is likely far greater than even President Trump has alleged.
A report by the Council on Foreign Affairs stated that “As of April 9, Taiwan had 380 confirmed cases and 5 deaths, a stunningly low number for a population of 23.6 million. This is particularly impressive given the high level of travel between China and Taiwan.”
The WHO’s 2020 World Health Assembly, which was a virtual conference held May 18-19, discussed approaches to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet Taiwan, with the most successful preventive plan on earth, was excluded from that conference. Its expertise in controlling COVID-19 could not be shared with the nations of the world.
The basis for that exclusion: pure politics. China would not allow the world’s 7.8 billion people to benefit from Taiwan’s expertise and experience. That is the power of China’s dictatorship.
