Democracy still superior
in fighting coronavirus
Re: “Rubin: Chinese propaganda claims democracy can’t stop COVID-19” (Opinion section, Mercurynews.com, March 17):
We must resoundingly reject Chinese propaganda that their authoritarian-communist system is superior to our democratic system of government in curbing the coronavirus.
First, the Chinese Communist Party hid the extent of this devastating disease until reality made it impossible to do so.
Second, we must not equate poor leadership in the United States in response to the unfolding health crisis with a failure of our democratic system. In the U.S. we have an imperfect democracy due to the anachronistic Electoral College, which denies one person one vote.
Finally, and most importantly, unlike China, we have a free press, sometimes referred to as the Fourth Estate. The Mercury News, among other media outlets, has enabled readers like me to make informed judgments that have often been counter to the misinformation coming from the White House and other elected officials.
