Letter: Support rate increase for regional center services

Support rate increase for
regional center services

I work for the Golden Gate Regional Center as a social worker; prior to that I was a special education teacher at a non-public school. I also have family members living with developmental disabilities. This cause is my passion.

I urge Gov. Gavin Newsom, Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks and state Sen. Nancy Skinner to support the minimum 8 percent rate increase for regional center services.

I can attest firsthand to the profound underfunding of these systems, which exist to serve some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and produces deleterious effects in the quality of life for individuals served, as well as the individuals working to serve them (while attempting to keep themselves and their families afloat on insufficient wages).

We need to take a small step toward correcting this deficit, and toward ensuring optimal outcomes for people served by the regional center, and those people who choose to make this service their life’s work.
